Project Nursery Portable Sound Machine: A Tiny White Noise Machine Perfect for Travel

Ever since my daughter was itty bitty, she’s slept with a white noise machine. They’re great for small homes so you can watch a movie without having to worry about turning down the TV, and they’re great for establishing a sound that means it’s time to sleep. I’m a fan. I even enjoy white noise at this point, so if you’ve stumbled onto this review and are a childless adult who likes to sleep with white noise, read on.

When we travel, we bring a white noise machine along, too, because we have now established that white noise = sleep. Up until a recent trip, we brought along a plug-in white noise machine that’s fine for road trips, but takes up too much real estate when we fly as we like to travel light.

Enter the Project Nursery Portable Sound Machine.

The buttons are clear and easy to use. To set the timer, turn the machine on and then use the power button to toggle between the different timer options. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

I searched around for a good long while before I settled on this Project Nursery white noise machine, and selected it for two main reasons – reviewers said it was loud despite its small size, and that battery life was strong. Both important points.

The Portable Sound Machine is petite at 3.9 x 3.7 x 1.6 inches in size. It’s light and easy to hold in one hand. There are no cords to mess with. It takes three AAA batteries and those three little batteries kept this going for the whole week we were gone, including naps and night times. The batteries still seem to have plenty of life left as the sound is still crisp and clear.

The back of the machine has a screw so that kids can’t easily take the batteries out.

There’s a clip on the top of the machine, so if you prefer to hang it up somewhere or clip it onto a car seat, you’ve got that option.

While we bought this little machine for its white noise, it’s got other sounds as well – two lullabies (Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik and Brahms Lullaby), waves, rain and a heartbeat. All sound strong and clear. Most importantly, the sound has a great range of volume from very quiet to loud enough to do its job of blocking out sounds outside your hotel room or guest room.

There’s a timer option as well. Set the sound to run for 15, 30, or 45 minutes, or constantly on. Bonus, you can easily see if you’ve set the timer mode as there are little lights next to the times at the bottom of the front of the device (unlike our sound machine at home, which doesn’t have much indication the timer is on until you just notice at some point walking by your child’s room that things sound too quiet in there).

A feature I especially liked is that you have to press and hold the power button to turn it on or turn it off, which might not seem handy if you’ve got a small baby, but it’s great if you’ve got a toddler who loves to punch buttons. It’s a lot harder to accidentally turn this on and off. Beyond toddlers who like buttons, it’s also pretty impossible for you to grab the machine and accidentally turn the sound off too.

As long as they’ve been exposed to a few minutes of light, the buttons glow for a few minutes after the lights go out.

Finally, the entire bank of buttons also glow in the dark, which is said to help you find and see the machine better in the dark. However, as with most glow in the dark stuff, the glow doesn’t last too long so I’m not sure if this feature is that useful in the middle of the night, but there are only a few buttons and they’re easy to feel and easy to memorize if you can’t see what you’re doing. But the glowing button are pretty cool while they’re actually glowing.

All in all, I was extremely happy with the Project Nursery Portable Sound Machine. It’s a solid little sound machine that doesn’t take up a lot of space in a diaper bag or backpack or suitcase, gets good battery life (though I’d bring a backup pair if you’re gone longer than a week since they have to die eventually), and does exactly what it’s supposed to do – provides a white noise backdrop and a little piece of familiarity from home while you’re away from home.

No compensation was provided for this review. I’m spreading the word just because this was a great find and I think it’s worth knowing about.
