The first time I saw a KAVU Rope Bag, I was at the grocery store, looking at some frozen veggies, and a woman standing next to me had her back toward me. I happened to look in her direction and then I saw it. The Rope Bag. I did something I rarely do and went over to her to ask her where she got it because it was just so nifty and unique. From that moment, I knew I wanted one and decided now was as good a time as any.
Just to disclose, I did get a Rope Sling (similar to the Rope Bag, but more on that later) from KAVU at half off for review purposes, but the story above is true. I reached out to them to review because I really loved this thing. All opinions below are my honest opinions.
First, the thing I wondered most about as I picked out my bag of choice – what exactly is the difference between the various Rope Bags and Rope Slings and Rope Packs and other various rope bags? The only real difference is the kind of fabric involved. The Rope Bag is made out of canvas. The Rope Sling is made from water-resistant polyester. The Rope Pack is made from water-resistant and rip-stop polyester.
Each of these also come in a mini version so you have a choice of a larger size or smaller size.
What you see in my photos in this review is a Mini Rope Sling in purple.
These bags are incredibly versatile. For instance, the woman I saw at the grocery store was wearing the bag as her purse. The size of the mini bags is perfect for this, but I don’t prefer having my purse on my back in a store, so I wanted one for long walks or hikes. You might see the rope straps and think they’d cut into your shoulder, but they’re super comfy. The ropes are attached together to form a flat strap that rests comfortably on your shoulder.
You can wear these bags across your body with the bag on your back, or on your shoulder with the bag hanging between the back of your arm and your side. The strap size is adjustable and there’s even a clip if you don’t prefer to slip the bag over your head. The bags are unisex and have many patterns and colors to suit all tastes and styles.
The bag features two vertical zippered larger pockets as well as two smaller compartments, one with a Velcro closure and one zippered. The Velcro pocket is smaller and works well for keys. The zippered smaller pocket was perfect for my cell phone.
The best thing about these Rope Bags and Rope Slings and all their various incarnations is that they free up your hands and front of your body. Whether you’re out on a hike or in a store or dealing with your kids, this is a boon. Personally, I’ve enjoyed that it leaves both arms free (and also doesn’t bump around on my hip like a purse) for hiking with a toddler. If she gets tired, I can carry her comfortably and not have to resituate. You could even wear a baby carrier on your front with this bag on your back. Of course, if you don’t have kids, your hands can be free to just hike in peace, but I don’t know what that means anymore.
